About The Liverpool Book Club

A message from Ian Skillicorn, the Director of The Liverpool Book Club

The Liverpool Book Club is a series of year-round special events with big name authors in iconic Liverpool venues, including Sefton Park Palm House and The Athenaeum.

I was inspired to start The Liverpool Book Club by the fantastic response to the annual Smithdown Litfest, which I established in 2017. Over the past few years the Litfest has welcomed many acclaimed guests such as Ann Cleeves, Jimmy McGovern and Jonathan Harvey.

The Liverpool Book Club gives us the opportunity to invite even more authors to speak to audiences throughout the city, while the Smithdown Litfest can continue to focus on events in its special part of south Liverpool.

Our first two events in March 2023 were The Squire of Knotty Ash and his Lady with Tony Nicholson and a special appearance by Lady Anne Dodd, and Murder on the Mersey with David Jackson and Luca Veste.

For autumn 2023 we have special events with crime fiction author Margaret Murphy and horror fiction writer Ramsey Campbell.

We have lots more events planned – watch this space!

Liverpool Book Club events are organised by Great Ideas Unlimited CIC, the not-for-profit organisation behind the Smithdown Litfest. Everyone involved in putting on the events, from the director to the ticket collector on the door, does so on a voluntary basis to give something to their community. All ticket proceeds from events go to good causes both home and away. Recently, we have supported the Al-Sabeen Children’s Hospital in Yemen and Smithdown in Bloom in Liverpool.

We’re sure you will enjoy our Liverpool Book Club events, and the guests we have lined up for you. Sign up to our mailing list to be the first to know what we have planned.

See you soon!

Ian
