An Evening with Jeff Young

Join Costa Award shortlisted author Jeff Young as he discusses his new book, Wild Twin. Following his beautiful memoir of Liverpool, Ghost Town, this time Jeff Young explores his journeys through places, memories and his inner self.

About Wild Twin: One morning in the 1970s Jeff Young slips out of his parents home with the intention of hitch-hiking to Paris in search of a version of himself he calls the ‘wild twin’, a shadow boy, a feral drifter. There he falls headlong into a fever dream of dive hotels, rough sleeping, getting lost, squats, violence, poverty, thieving, illness and madness. Journeying across Europe, from cathedrals to doss houses, from Red Light district to deportation and breakdown, finally Young returns to present-day Liverpool, caring for his dying father in the house he ran away from fifty years earlier, remembering the past with a man who can no longer remember.

Jeff Young is a writer for screen, stage and radio. A former senior lecturer in Creative Writing at Liverpool John Moores University, Jeff lives in Liverpool.

Jeff will be in conversation with LJMU English academic and writer Joe Moran. The talk takes place in the Athenaeum’s Library Reading Room at 6pm, followed by a book signing at 6.45pm. Doors open at 5.30pm with drinks at the bar in the Newsroom.
